Pajero Discussion

As the site gets busier people are emailing me and adding comments to certain posts. This is great - please continue! But some of the comments under certain posts haven’t been relevant to the post topic, so I thought I’d start a section where anything goes. I’ll move comments here from other posts if they aren’t really relevant to the post.

Please post a comment below if you just want to say hello, have a question about Pajeros, or simply want to let everyone know about your truck.

    Hi Bryan
Getting to the matrix itself is a big job requiring removal of the whole dash. Takes many hours. I’d have a look at other parts of the system first. Try this:
Raise the front of the car with engine running, put heaters on full, leave radiator cap off and keep squeezing the top and bottom hoses. If this fails flush the matrix before trying to remove it.
    Hope this helps - Tim

Hello, i have a question i am hoping you maybe able to help with. I have no heating on my pajero. Do you know where the heater matrix maybe located or who would be the best person to contact to find out details on locating and checking whether it needs replacing. Any herlp would be most apprecitated. Thank you, Bryan

Kailaan, I wouldn’t know about temperatures that low (thankfully!), but yes, Pajeros do have a few issues when the temperatures drop cold. But if it’s in good condition and serviced regularly I believe you should have no problems.
You should also consider finding one with the Winter Pack which mine has. Usually these will have a heated fuel filter which makes a big difference. The Winter Pack was originally designed to cope with cold temperatures in Japan, though I’m not sure how cold it gets there.
You could also check out this post: http://www.pajero.org.uk/heated-fuel-filter-head/

    Tim,
Thanks for the advice. After having seen quite a few blogs about Paj’s having trouble starting in the cold it got me thinking. I am going to be moving to the Northern regions of Canada. And I was wondering if you thought the Pajero would hold up to Winters with -25 to -35 degree tempatures? I did see quite a few people in Finnland with diesel Paj’s, and they seem to be doing alright. Any advice would be great!!!

    Kailaan.

    Tim Says:

Hi Kailaan, thanks for dropping by.
If prices are like they are here, then a 2.8 is hardly any more expensive than a 2.5 and overall the 2.8 is the better engine, especially if you are towing.
Towing capacity is a bit of a grey area. The handbook states:
Standard tow bar - 1800 kg braked
Heavy duty bar - 2500 kg braked
This is for 2.5 and 2.8. But I know people who happily tow much more than that. Much better with a LWB. Also you need to look at your local laws for that particular vehicle. I believe in the UK we can go up to 3.3 tonnes with it.
    Hope this helps!

    Kailaan Says:

    Hi,

I’ve been looking into the LWB Pajero as my next vehicle. I am interested in a diesel and was wondering which diesel engine would be the best, the 2.5L or the 2.8? Do you notice a big diffrence between the two?

Also what is the max towing capacity for the Pajero?
    Thanks in advance.

Freerk - great to hear from you and thanks for sharing your Pajero’s story. I’d love to make more of a feature of it, so I’ve sent an email.

Matt - thanks for the input over Mike’s radio. Hopefully this helps Mike with his radio and it’s one for me to note in the future.

Martin - thanks for the advice over Karon’s problem. Sounds like you know what you’re talking about!

    Thanks again everyone - Tim

  19. 51
    Martin Says:

    Karon,

Sounds like your alternator belt is slack. If you cant tighten it (if it to far along the travel), it probably needs replacing - not a quick job on the Pajero (maybe 1-2 hours labour). If the battery has charged and been depleted a number of times it is probably shot with too many dead cells and you may need to replace the battery. While the engine is running you should be able to tell if any charge is going to the battery using a normal multimeter.

    Hi Tim,

Matt from the Solomon Islands here. Regarding Mike’s radio problem; I had the same issue in the Solomon’s and I purchased a relately cheap “Band Expander” which plugs into the aerial lead. Worked well for a few months and then it decided decided not to play the game anymore. I ended up buying a cheap CD/radio from Australia and it fitted in fine. Been bopping along ever since.

    Freerk Says:

    Hi Tim,

I have been reading your blog for several weeks now and I must say that I am enjoying it. There’s many blogs out there, but they are no good if they’re not updated regularly. Love to read your short stories.

I found it when I was looking for technical advise on my very own 1994 Pajero 2.8 turbo diesel intercooler SWB (love that name :-)

A short intro: my name is Freerk (Dutchy) and I’m working/living in Mozambique. I arrived in July and the Pajero was the second car we looked at, we truly liked it from the start. However, after a couple of months she started giving us some trouble, especially off-road. Smoking heavily and losing power. I’m not a technically brilliant person but I do know a little bit about cars. Because my engine needs air and diesel to operate I figured there might be something wrong with the air filter, intercooler (Africa is dusty you know) and it must be over fueling. But, few weeks later it started consuming lots of oil (3L on 200km!), now I really started to worry.

Through a friend I got in contact with a very trustworthy mechanic in Maputo, over 70 years old who works from the driveway outside is home. He investigated the car and came up with a “plan de campagne”. Basically our car is undergoing major brain surgery. We’ll change, refurbish the following:

    - Rings
    - Gasket
    - Pistons
    - Injectors
    - Turbo (will be refurbished)
    - Timing chain tensioner
    - Diesel filter
    - Oil filter

Probably forgot some minor details, but hopefully it will be ticking like a Swiss masterpiece once again. I’ll try to inform you on the outcomes. Here you will find some random pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/freerksmit/sets/72157607541171705/

    Keep up the good work!

    Freerk

    Tim Says:

    Hi Mike.
Not a problem I’ve heard of before I must say, but I’m thinking that maybe a radio specialist might be able to help you? I would guess that if possible, the internals might be able to be set up differently.
Alternatively I don’t think you’ll have much problem fitting new radios. Lots of people in the UK do it and there are different fitting brackets and harnesses you can buy to help. Hope this helps.

I bought a 1999 Pajero io a couple of years ago as city car to drive around windhoek (namibia), what a fantastic vehicle.
This purchase enabled me to take my bmw 330d to johannesburg
and leave it there in my wife’s tender loving care away from the
blistering heat and to sleep in the garage every night.
I was so impressed with the io that i bought another one for my wife and she adores it too.
The only problem is the radio(s). They are set to the low band FM
frequencies. Local dealers will not touch the vehicles because they are “imported” and the other options i have been given are
“Oh stick another one in”. I am reluctant to do that because it will interfere with the originality of the vehicles and maybe even the
job of finding radios that fit as precisely as the oem eqipment will
    impossible.
Can anyone please offer a suggestion.

    Hi Karen
You’re probably better off getting a professional to have a look at the emissions thing as it could be various things.
I’d advise buying a handbook for the warning signs and allsorts of other things. Available from various places including Amazon. Or just ask away here and I should be able to tell you what any of them mean. There are free ones available from the web but they don’t tend to be very reliable from what I’ve heard.

hi tim thankyou for your reply.
ive been a electro-mech for 20 odd years now, originally a auto-electrician,but many areas in the trade have changed today.especially with the introduction of engine managment. Not the best way for us d.i.y car repairers, thankfully the models ive bought in the past are conventional diesel injection.
soon after buying my pajero it developed this fault,i read up what i could to try and avoid costly garage bills. The other day i give her a new oil and filter change,i also added an additive to the engine oil thats supposed to revive any rubber seals that comes into contact with the engine oil,it said on the tin (allow 300 miles to allow it to work.I,m at 173 miles so for after adding it and the smoking is only appearing on start up,and it isnt cutting out after a mile or so.maybe it will work short term until i get a bit more info to replace the seal eventually.I think i,m going to give it a bottle of injecter cleaner this may improve starting and have a look at the heater plugs also, will hope some of these will help .
    thanks ricka
ive also got a noise when i turn right but that going to have to wait pajero s are all fun lol

Thanks for posting Steve. I really appreciate some input on this.
Hadn’t thought about the EGR valve - sounds like good advice. For those that are interested I’ll be servicing mine at some point in the next few months - I’ll do a write up about it.
Would be interesting to know how Stuart’s getting on with his problem.

  35. 35
    Steve Says:

I’d suggest removing and cleaning the EGR valve which tends to get very clogged. If the drop in power is accompanied by black smoke under load or when starting then this is also a marker to support EGR theory. Some people remove the valve and fit a blanking plate, however I’d recommend against this as the valve serves a purpose and when serviced (cleaned) reguarly it works well. All you need is an EGR valve gasket and some injector cleaner. Google “clean egr valve pajero” and you should find more info.

    Hi Matt

Thanks for getting in touch and great to hear from you.

The outside temperature sensor should be located inside the front bumper. From what I remember it’s inside the plastic end piece, but can’t remember which side. You should be able to locate the wire by having a feel around and as a last resort take the bumper off (easy enough). But I have heard of people finding them in other places as they must have been moved by previous owners. In the bumper end is where they should be anyway. Good luck with it and let me know how you get on.
    Tim

UPDATE: Matt actually found the sensor before he read my “words of wisdom”. Apparently some bright spark had moved it at some point and it was next to the radiator. Hence the reason Matt was getting some pretty dodgy temperature readings!

    Matt Says:

    Hi Tim,

    Great idea with the website.

We live in the Solomon Islands and bought a 1996 SWB Pajero from Japan around the same time as you did.

Absolutely fantastic car. My wife and I are really happy with it.

The only problem I’ve had (and I can’t say that it is exactly a major one), is that the Outside Temperature Displayed is incorrect. There are no reputable motor mechanics, let alone Mitsubishi dealers in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

I bought a CD from the UK which contained the Workshop Manuals for all Pajero/Shoguns; this it tells me how to test the sensor which I am quite capable of, however, it doesn’t tell me where to find it.

I figure that it must be in or around the engine bay, but after lots of looking I am yet to find it.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Matt

It is not thought to transfer to other cars at all.
The improvement measures were given only with the EGR hose in the previous car inspection though my Bluemoon did not hang in the recall in Japan.
It had stopped when having begun to have run before the movement of the jet pump dulled due to the cold, and the engine got warm.

I’ve heard of quite a few people doing the preheat button thing and was going to look into it myself but I managed to sort out my starting trouble.
I’ve no idea about immobilisers I’m afraid. Window tinting is near the bottom of a long list of little jobs to do for now, so I’ll probably do it next Spring I think.
Yeah, I guess ebay’s the best place for a cheap roof rack and ladder - just make sure you search under Shogun as well as Pajero!
I’d be interested in the ball joints job when you get around to it.

Hello again, just a little blog on how I’m getting on with my new pride and joy, (LWB 2.5td) following the fuel filter change it has been a joy to drive, cold starting was a problem, so I started by changing the glow plugs which were goosed, unfortunatly this did not fix the problem I then took my meter and placed it between the buss bar and earth and got my son to turn the key, all I got was approx 9.5volts for a second or two, not being one to be disheartened by this type of problem and being a tight wad when it comes to spending my hard earned cash, My solution was to simply wire in manual pre heat push button on the steering column opposite side to the key, No more problem, starts first time every time.
I’ve just purchased an immobiliser and a keyless entry upgrade from my favourite store (ebay) and I’m fitting it soon, assuming I can find some way of identifying the wiring colour code (any help would be appreciated), I’ve also purchaced the dark window tint film for the rear windows which I think looks good, I’ve tried putting it on one window and lost the plot when it went wrong, so I’m breaking a long term rule of mine and I’m going to pay someone to do the job for me.
I’ve removed the Pajero fog lamps which I found to be useless and replaced them with a descent pair of spot lamps, speaking of fog lamps I have also got to fit a rear one.
I’m now on the lookout for a roof rack and rear door ladder, I’ve seen them on ebay but they are still quite pricey, I’ll bide my time, I’m not in a rush,
One job I have to do for the next MOT is replace the top and bottom ball joints on both sides, I’ll let you know how I get on and record and problems or tips I come across to aid any of you DIY’ers/tight wads like me.

Hi John. I suppose the obvious conclusion would be that they’re not being charged correctly. One of the reasons some Pajeros have two batteries is so that they can run lots of electrics, so what you had switched on shouldn’t have caused any problem. Guess you need to check the charging set up.
Then you might just be unlucky enough to have two worn out batteries which would need replacing. Of course this is something you need to be spot on before the mornings start getting cold.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi Tim, More problems, just been a 100 mile run, car went great, unfortunately when I stopped it it would’nt start, batteries totaly flat, I did have the lights on and the heater, also had a plug in the high amp socket in the centre consul running a very small item, has anyone got any ideas, I checked to make sure I hadnt knocked any connections off when I did the filter, funny that both batteries went flat, I was led to believe they were independant of one another, again if you can give any details on this please, anyway must go and tinker again to see if I spot anything.

Hi Naeem. Very common problem. Have a look at this awesome post about it on the Pocuk Forums - Pajero Flashing Light Fix
    Hope this helps.

I have a problem with my pajero. The 4X4 indicator in the dashboard is blinking like when you change from 2 to 4 wheel drive. It blinks all the time but when in 4X4 it stops like it should. Do you have any idea how to check this problem and solve it.

Hi Stephen - thanks for sharing your photos with us. Your Girlfriend’s Bluemoon looks in superb condition. I see she’s still got the original wheels on and the front bumper finisher - 2 bits that are missing from mine.
    Thanks again - Tim

Hi Justin - thanks for the comment. Yeah that sounds like a good price. My fog lamps are bubbling just the same. Not sure if you can get genuine Mitsubishi ones anywhere apart from ebay, but you could have a look at http://www.pajeroaccessories.co.uk to see if there’s any on there you fancy.
Good luck with the new Pajero.

Hi there, Just brought one today 2.8 td 1995 on a N plate. Really good condition and 96,000 miles. Paid £1900 for it which i thought was good value. Just the spot/fog lamps have a little bubble rust on them and thats it. Do you know where i can get some from? Cheers Jdub.
