Hi Tim,
A dear friend of mine is having starter motor problems and needs it replacing so I volunteered myself!!!
It’s a 2.8TD Pajero 1996. It looks a mightmare of a job! No space to get to the top bolt and if you manage it, no room to remove it unless you remove the front prop! Am I missing something and it’s a simple job? Poor friend is nearly 80 and can’t be lying on the floor hitting the starter motor every time it sticks!

hi
i have had my 28 pajero for a year.
love it to bits great to run.
i would like to ask if you need to have the jeep running on 2 batterys?the batterys in mine are dead due to the waether this year.i was wondering if i could possibly run the jeep on 1 new battery as i was told this would be ok,i am just wanting to check this with your site if you dont mind
yours shaz
January 15th, 2010 at 8:03 am
Hi Shaz
Yes it can be run OK on one battery.
January 15th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
thanks very much tim.
also when i put the jeep into 4wheel drive after a while it starts to make a noise at the front passengers wheel.the noise is like a metal rubbing.i was off roading couple of weeks ago so was wondering if it could just be needing greased this was the first n only time i would do this.i dont realy use the 4 wheel drive only cause bad weather i had to.
could you possible give me an idea what it could be
yours shaz
January 19th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
Shaz, the first thing I’d do is take the wheel off and see if you can find any wedged in stones or anything like that if you’ve been offroading.

hi all, we have a 96 pajero turbo diesel 2.8ltr intercooled which is giving us big problems at the moment.we have taken it to 3 mechanics so far with none of them knowing how to fix the problem which is when the motor is cold it will start up ok but after driving it for 500mtrs or so it just cuts out then after starting the motor again (20-30 seconds of turning the key)it will start with a big cloud of white smoke and off we go again before it does it again.this might happen 2 3 times before the motor warms up then its not a problem.what i could do iamreally in tense
October 23rd, 2010 at 12:13 pm
hi ekanath
i had the same problem and mine turned out to be taking in air at the fuel filter and the rubber pipes that connect to it.
hope this is of some help
January 20th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Hi Ekanath
Sounds like your fuel pump seals. I’d recommend finding a mechanic who is knowledgable about Pajeros as any good mechanic should be able to spot this.
Good luck.

Thanks Tim, will try and let you know the outcome

I have a 1991 LWB 2.5TD Auto import which I have had for 3years now. Affectionately known as “the Big Lump” or “The Beast” it is is a real workhorse and I’m gradually working through it to restore paintwork and general condition mechanically.
I have had new Cyl head (last year) and just put another turbo on (this week)- great deal from Ebay and a guy in Hull – but trying to get a few more mile per gallon – about 20 tops round town and 25 on a run. A friend has exactly same car and gets 30 round town and 35 on a run. Going to have injectors and fuel pump looked at by diesel specialist on Monday so will let you know.
Anyone getting really good economy from their LWB 2.5TD?? I’d be happy for advice.

Hi i have a 1997 2.5 Pajero diesel intercooled, could you tell me what the fuel pump timing is and where te egr valve is situated please.
Many thanks,
John.

hi i have a 96 pajero i have a problem where the doors will lock fine but when i unlock them with the key the locks all round the car click up and down continueasly for a good couple of min then they stop. would you have any suggestions?thank you
January 24th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
Hi Peteypops
From my experience a nicely running 2.5 or 2.8 tdi Pajero will normally give you at best 25mpg. That’s from listening to lots of other Pajero owners speaking about this in the last few years.
30-35mpg is just not something I’ve ever seen proven, so I’d love to know how your mate does it!
January 24th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
Hi Scott
Do you have an alarm that might be affecting this?
January 25th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
Hi,
Just last week I had a problem with my 1993 SWB Pajero TDi starting and continuing to run. My garage said it was due to a corroded fuel pipe which was letting air in and diesel out. Before it was sorted the A/T Temp light came on briefly (while driving) and as it went out again I thought nothing more about it. Now tonight as I was driving to band practice the A/T Temp light came on and stayed on. I went back home am checking in here to find out what sort of problems I would have had if I continued to drive with the light on – presumably some damage to the auto transmission. Ill take it to the garage tomorrow but any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated
January 25th, 2010 at 10:09 pm
Hi David
Don’t drive it far with the A/T light on. Just get it to the garage and have them sort it out as soon as possible. Over heating can be catastrophic. Shouldn’t be anything to do with the fuel pipe issue.
Good luck.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the prompt reply, that’s kind of what I thought. Great resource.
Take care

Dear TIM,
i bought one used Pajero 2.8 ltr engine, its spedometer is showing 46000 km.
My mechanic told me there is variation in compresstion in all four cylinders. out of four cylinder, two cylinders has got low compression. can you let me know what is the cause and what is the remedy.
Thanks
Naveen
January 26th, 2010 at 8:01 am
Hi Naveen
Could be one of a few things, like head gasket, but I couldn’t say really. What did your mechanic say?
January 26th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
hi my name is mally i bought a 1992 pajero 2.5 td lwb last week in the uk and drove it to bulgaria where i live now the whole trip (3 days was bloody freezeing) the heater was not blowing any warm air at all so when i got back home to bulgaria i was looking for ideas on the net and found your site sounds like it is a common fault with the water valve or heater matrix i will let you know the outcome. your site has been a real help many thanks. mally (bulgaria)
January 27th, 2010 at 8:03 am
Hi Mally
Wrong time of year to be driving for 3 days without heat! Anyway, good luck with it.

Hi Tim,
Just brought a Pajero 2.8 diesel SWB, love it, it’s done 219k Kms but still runs well although I’m having problems starting it in the mornings. It ticks over fine and eventually starts but takes at least 50 – 70 seconds and requires half choke and foot on the accelerator. Where would you start, Plugs, oil filter, air filter or somewhere else ?????
Love your site by the way, very very helpful
Thanks
James
January 30th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Hi James
I’d start with the glow plugs, especially if it’s cold where you are. Lot of information can be found here: http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=67
Good luck with it.

I have just recently got a Pajero 1993 2.5 A/T Intercooled SWB. I have the battery light now showing and battery is not holding charge. I have bougt a new altenator belt and with to replace the old one which is very slack and to the limit. Is this a difficult job as it seems I have to remove many items to do this. Could you give any advice and if possible a few pics. Thank you.

Hi John
I’ve never done it myself, so it might be worth asking here: http://www.pocuk.com/forums/

February 10th, 2010 at 10:28 am
Well Tim. Thanks for your advice and I carried out work myself. However having done that I have a slight annoying problem as follows. Charged both batteries which are New and during daytime driving I have no problems but when I turn on lights etc at night battery goes flat and unable to start. There is no lights for charge battery showing. Engine restarts no problem during day. Any ideas ????

My darling beloved decided, I wasn’t busy enough and blew the head gasket on her 2.8td exceed, I am a mechanic, and when I stripped it down I found the head was cracked, which i believe is quite common. However, money later, on refitting I decided to refer to the haynes manual for torque setting for the head bolts. It describes initially torqueing all the bolts up uniformly to 100NM, backing all the way off, tightening to 50NM and tightening 90degrees all around in to increments twice. My problem was that none of the bolts that I got could take 100NM!!! Do you have anymore information, or were they duff bolts?? Many Thanks
February 12th, 2010 at 7:14 pm
Hmmm, not sure about that Thomas, last head gasket I did was on a Talbot Sunbeam!
You’d better have a look here and ask the knowledgeable folks about it: http://www.pocuk.com/forums/

February 16th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
hey people, my mate has got the 2.8 intercooled turbo pajero , an it will only start if he puts a cable from the battery to a glowplug, and then loads black an grey smoke is it the glowplugs or just nackered
thanks guys
October 30th, 2010 at 6:23 pm
Hi Jeff, I had to do exactly what you do with the wire from battery to glow plug, but in my case I put the wire from battery to the glow plug side of the relay. It turned out to be a faulty glow plug relay – the one that is connected to the battery + post on the battery nearest to the front. One from the scrappie fixed my problem
January 31st, 2011 at 9:59 pm
i have no glow plug light on in the vehicle and i have to also put a wire from the battery to the glow plugs, it will then start all the time whilst it’s warm, have you any ideas what it might be?

Hi Denys
Amazon UK certainly sell them and various Pajero owners clubs too. Not sure about your part of the world though. Just try Googling “Pajero Owners Manual”. Well worth having in my opinion.
Good luck with the new Pajero

February 23rd, 2010 at 8:02 am
is it the fuel filter ?
February 24th, 2010 at 8:50 am
My babe pajeri io 2000 of late consumes alot of oil and their is no leakage, what could be the problem?
it also vibrates alot and looses power often.
Am in Kenya.
What can i do?
February 24th, 2010 at 9:27 am
Liva – Yes I’d say it was the fuel filter warning light from what you’ve described. Means there’s water in it.
February 24th, 2010 at 11:38 am
tyvm tim . but pls just tell me should i change it or cleane it ? i love your site ty again
February 25th, 2010 at 12:08 pm
Well if it is the fuel filter warning light it means there’s water in the filter. At the bottom of the filter there’s a little tap that you can open to drain any excess water.
Personally I’d change the filter though and check all the associated pipes and electrics.
If you do all that and the light still shows you need to look into it further.
February 25th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
thankyou verry much tim . i chaged the fuel filter and it works . thank you again
February 27th, 2010 at 7:40 am

hello tim how are you ? can i ask you if you have a list for all warning lights on pajero 93 ?
February 27th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Hi Liva
My Pajero handbook goes up to 1996. You can get the Pajero handbook for yours from various places, including Amazon. That’ll tell you everything you need to know about the warning lights and many more things.
February 28th, 2010 at 9:32 am
Hi Tim,
Thanks for the advice (Jan 30th) re my glow plugs (changed and all fixed) so thanks.
I have recently brought a rear roof spoiler to go on the 2.8 SWB 1994 Pajero. The spoiler comes without fittings (an e-bay purchase) do you have any advice about how to fit it without damaging the roof???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
James
February 28th, 2010 at 12:17 pm
Hi James
Glad you got it fixed.
My Pajero had the roof spoiler fitted when I bought it, so I’ve absolutely no idea about fitting one I’m afraid. That’ll be an adventure!
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
