James
just make sure the fixings are secure, and that the spoiler is the real deal, some cheap spoilers have been known to come off, not good.

Hi Fred
No I’m afraid I haven’t heard of that problem. Has it always been like that or just started?
March 6th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
Fred.I can only assume that you have a short circuit some were.1999 that comes under UK licences….Id love to help you, however.I would get an auto lecko check out your wiring loom
March 6th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
Fred I have been online and reesearched your problem….1. did you buy your Mitz in UK
2….is it an import.
Have you tried to modify any light systems on the vehicle.ie,extra brake lights, spot lights.and so on
March 7th, 2010 at 10:15 pm
Hi everybody, ive just collected my 94k 1994(M) Pajero 2.8 TD auto LWB in blue and i love it! superb value for £1800, i went for the 2.8 for the chain driven engine.
its bodywork is beautiful for its age. the interior is as clean as a brand new one and its engine sounds as sweet as a nut, it purrs like a new car!
a couple of trivial issues for its age which i would love answering are why the headlight washer jets wont work (is it common?) and the digital compass display seems to just flick up and down between poles instead of pointing in any direction (it looks like a digital clock that needs setting)
your comments and answers would be a great help,
Cheers,
Neil.

Tim The problem with the lights only started about 2 months ago.I bought it from a bloke who bought the car new and I am the second owner. The car is in unreal condition. I rang the first owner and he never had any problems with the lights.I talked to an auto electrician yesterday and he said maybe check the headlight relays one might be stuck on. If I find out what is wrong I will let you know in case anyone else has the same problem
Regards Fred
March 8th, 2010 at 8:16 am
Thanks Fred, it would be great to know what the problem is.
March 8th, 2010 at 8:22 am
Hi Neil
Sounds like you’ve found a beauty there!
Haven’t got headlight washers myself, but I believe you need the headlights on first before they’ll work?
After that, you could look to see if the pump is seized. This can be fixed with some lubricant.
This might help with the compass – http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=64067

March 9th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Thanks Chris!
Never changed one myself so I wouldn’t know. Maybe someone else will be able to help or recommend a fitter near you.
Good luck with it.
March 12th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
hi,can you change main bearing shells on a 2.8 diesel engine without removing the engine?
March 13th, 2010 at 7:01 am
great site! i’ve learned a lot reading everyone’s comments.
could anyone please tell me if a fuel consumption of 14 mpg is normal for a pajero 1991 2.5 diesel engine with automatic transmission?
its seems a bit low, i was expecting somewhere between 18-20 mpg.
anyone? thanks!
March 13th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
hi there,
just ouht my first pajero, 1991 swb/automatic/diesel. There’s no owners handbook and want to get one on ebay/amazon. might sound dumb, but can anyone tell me if it’s a Mk 1 or Mk 2? It is the new shape (import), but I don’t know if this makes it a Mark 2 – which are said to start from 92, or if the engine is completely different for different years.
ta for your help.

Hi there,
Just searching the web and came along this site. So i thought I may as well post about my Pajero. I brought a 1992 2.5td intercooler MK2 pajero about a month ago. It cost me £250, now, this sounds like there would be some serious problems with it, but no! The only problem with it is a flickering light, as it has been stood for 2 years (started first time though!). It has some all terrain tyres on, a new spare, and alot of body guards. There is no damage on the body! I have been considering MOTing it, but the appeal to turn it into a serious offroading machine has its appeals. The reason I came onto this site though, is that I was wondering if anyone new of any kits that could be used for a suspension lift?
March 14th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Nic – You should be getting somewhere near 25mpg in a nicely running 2.5 Pajero and obviously lower than that if you thrash it everywhere.
Lots of things to look at, but start off with a good all round service.
March 14th, 2010 at 10:01 pm
smilermonkey – Does yours look like the same shape as this: http://www.pajero.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/2.jpg (Mk1)
Or this: http://www.pajero.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img42.jpg (Mk2)?
March 14th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
Oak – Do a Google Search for Old Man Emu and Ironman for Pajero for a start. There are other suspension lifts out there but these are popular.
March 14th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
Hi Tim, shape looks more like a Mk 2 (but no raised sporty bit in centre of the bonnet, as in your picture link).
Guess it’s a 1991 Mark 2 then? Better get on ebay to find an owner’s manual. Thanks for your help.
Smilermonkey.
March 14th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
Tim,
cheers for the info, it looks like the second one.
March 15th, 2010 at 12:50 am
hi. i have a 1996 snow athlete and i am trying to find decals to replace the fading stickers. can anybody help with this matter regards pete
March 15th, 2010 at 4:56 am
25 mpg?! wow. that is envious. thank you, at least i know it isn’t normal and that my car has a problem that needs fixing.
March 29th, 2010 at 10:52 am
Good luck with it
April 2nd, 2010 at 4:04 am
hey Tim,
just an update on the mpg, i had been having problems with a leak in the cooling system to so i had a hose and very black dirty air filter replaced and voila! a marked improvement from 14 to 17mpg. still far from the 25mpg you mentioned but i’m getting there
also, i’m someone who also owns a paj said it maybe that i have a dirty transmission so i should have it “flushed”, i don’t know exactly what he means by that. but i’ll have it done soon. maybe he’s right coz i notice i have to floor my accelerator to 3300 rpm before it shifts to fourth gear.
anyway, thanks, still a very good site you have.
April 2nd, 2010 at 7:01 am
Great to see some improvement at least. If I were you I’d just get the car serviced totally.
If your air filter was like that, what must the oil and fuel filters be like?
April 2nd, 2010 at 8:44 am
yes i did have it checked, engine oil was changed before asked my first query on your site. and then the air filter and cooling system. i have to do it piecemeal since we don’t have shops specializing in pajeros here.
unfortunately, the mechanics i went to all agree that a 14mpg is normal for an automatic tranny. that’s why i started researching and you suggested otherwise and i believe you’re right so i’m off to prove the mechanics wrong. once i get at least 22 mpg then i can go correct their misconception. hopefully i can do that soon.
April 2nd, 2010 at 8:53 am
Fuel filter next then? It’s just one of those things where you’ve got to keep trying the next thing and in the end you’ll have a really nice running car.
April 2nd, 2010 at 9:16 am
exactly. i also have a turbo cleaning lined up and then the ball joints, bushing and wheel alignment. and let me tell you, it’s all worth the trouble i have to go through tinkering with it and finding out what makes this machine tick or at least until i get that recommended 22-25 mpg
March 15th, 2010 at 7:54 am
Smilermonkey – if you don’t have the ‘powerhump’ in the bonnet you must have a 2.5 rather than a 2.8 with the hump.
March 15th, 2010 at 7:58 am
Pete – Not sure if you’ll find original Snow Athlete stickers anywhere, but any local decal maker should run you up some very good copies. I’ve seen this done by a mate who has a machine and the results were very good.

Hi all took truck in for MOT today and this is what it failed on:
Measurments
Brake Failures: DBT service Brake Efficiency: 45%, DBT Park Break Efficiency: 5%
Reason for refusal of a Test Certificate
001 Offside stop lamp not working
002 Parking break lever has no reserve travel
003 Service break efficiency below requirements
004 Parking break efficiency below requirements
Truck History – 1989 LWB Pajero Exeed 3L
Had rear break pads put on at MR clutch, they said te discs were gone front and back (back were far worse) so i got some (rear ones) at Milners for £30.00 each + Vat delivery.
Friend put them on and said the callipers were seized and could not get pads in so he ground them down and put them back on. Not sure if he pushed the piston in fully as he was really struggling. I know this is counter productive but I did not want to leave the truck there.
Before he put disks and pads on there was a sound coming fron offside rear breaks that stopped when breaks were applied slightly. that noise is still there. Also the break warning light comes on and stays on untill I’ve been driving around 20 mns then it goes out.
I have been quoted £68.00 each for rear callipers and £52.00 to fit them. What would you guys suggest is the cheapest option for me? Doing it myself is not an option, not for breaks not taking any chances there.
Thanks
Kev
Does anyone have any recon or working callipers for sale for my model Pajero? Mine is the gold MK1 on this website. kevinofengland@hotmail.co.uk

Hi again,
Just curious, what is ment to be worth more, an automatic or a manual pajero?
thanks
Oak Richardson
March 18th, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Hi Oak
Manuals are much rarer than automatics, but it doesn’t make one worth more than the other from a money point of view. At least that’s been my experience of watching prices over the years.
March 28th, 2010 at 11:15 pm
I am the owner of a 1.1 Automatic Petrol Pajero Junior, absolutely brilliant and good fun to drive.Just back on the road after a 7 month lay up. Just one problem, the front fog lamps are not working, I have checked them and they are ok, but cannot find the switch to control these, checked the wiring into the loom and this appears to be ok too! Anybody got any ideas please, or were I can get a manual/wiring diagram?
March 29th, 2010 at 10:54 am
Geoff, have you found any switch, maybe an after market added one that might be the one? If so, try turning the sidelights on first before you use it. My Pajero requires the sidelights to be on first before the fogs can be switched on.

I have a ‘N’ (96) Shogun Pajero 2.8TD automatic, I have recently noticedd the passanger footwell is wet , water is leaking in from somewhere ,is there a common fault / area where rain water is leaking in from , can anyone help please.
Where should I start looking and check.Thanks.
April 1st, 2010 at 7:21 am
Yes the footwell on the passenger side getting flooded is pretty common and can come from a few areas.
Sunroof is one place to look, followed by the side mirror attached to the door. Also there’s a hole through the bulkhead to the engine on that side that may let water in, but that’d be fairly unusual.
You should also check the seals around the windscreen for any corrosion.
April 1st, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Thanks for the reply, I will definitely look for another switch ans also try it with the sidelights on.
Just one further question, would there be a separate water supply bottle for the rear window washer/wipe please??
April 1st, 2010 at 5:46 pm
Depending on your model, the rear window wash bottle is in a panel in the back door or in a panel near the rear wheel arches.
April 2nd, 2010 at 11:48 pm
Hi Tim, i’m sure somebody able to post similar questions before but i could not find the old thread. Can you please let me know what is causing the A/T indicator of my Pajero 4M40 engine blinking? Does it require ATF change or any other else? Thanks In Advance!
April 3rd, 2010 at 7:20 am
Usually an ATF change will fix this, but it could also be caused by faulty connections. It’s quite common for the sensor cables to get knocked during MOT for instance. Personally I’d change the fluid first and see if that fixes it. At least you’ll have nice new fluid in it!
April 12th, 2010 at 12:01 pm
Hi,
The temperature readings on my car are constantly stuck at -27 inside and 7 inside? I was wondering if you had any idea of how to fix this?

April 12th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
hi we have a 1993 2.8 pajero we replaced the fuel filter but it still stalls, it starts well then in seconds it stalls or trys to. after its running it runs and starts well, it ran well for the first few days after filter change.
thanks cathy
April 19th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
Hi all,
I have a k reg paj my second one, the fuel gauge works then it just goes straight to empty, even when we have just fuelled up! has anybody had this problem? does anyone know where gauge is on fuel tank to check? hope all this makes sense!
thanks Digga
April 20th, 2010 at 7:13 am
Possibly a problem with the sender unit in the tank.
Lift up your back seats (middle in LWB) and you should find a metal plate which can be opened, giving access to top of the tank.
First just try cleaning the sender and see if that works. If not, try earthing it to test it still works – earth the yellow wire in the 3 pin plug. If this makes the gauge go up, it works, if not you’ll need a new one.
April 20th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Cheers tim al try that and let you know how i get on

Hi Jeffrey
I don’t know which oil for that engine and if nobody else answers you could try looking here: http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=108

Hi Tim
thanks for the the website, it really helps a lot. I just did the oil change yesterday, the 5w40 works really good on my car!

hi I have recently bought a 1993 Pajero 2.8td automatic. How many gears should it have, I appear only to get to 3rd. Also my rev counter is intermittently working what could be the issue?
ps new to the blog and it is great.
November 11th, 2010 at 11:11 pm
again i had same problem a couple of years back so i think tim is right….i had an auto electrician fix the 3rd gear problem at a cost of £213 but he said the rev counter were a dash fault and the dash would need replacing which would be costly so i didnt bother, it works if i tap the top right hand corner when it goes off lol
May 23rd, 2010 at 11:03 am
Hi Steve
4 gears on yours. Have you got the overdrive button (on the gear shift) pressed in?
Rev counter sounds like a loose connection. Has the speedo been converted to MPH? If so there’s a black box behind the clocks that was used to do the conversion – might be where the loose wire is.
October 20th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
Check the two temperature sender units above the injector pump. I had one here with the same problem. Someone had swapped the terminals around.
May 27th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
HI 1993 AUTO K reg 2500 TURBO INTERCOOLER SWB AND MY STARTER MOTOR IS NOT WORKING I WAS LOOKING TO BUY A USED ONE ON EBAY THERE SEEMS TO BE DIFFERENT TYPES CAN YOU HELP ME TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE AS IM NOT SURE
May 30th, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Have a 1992 pejaro had problems with batteries draining overnight, electrician said back battery had dead cell and was draining front battery so he took the earth off and said charge the front one, it was ok for a day and half then we went a few yards dow the road and it just died cant shut window nothing
June 3rd, 2010 at 12:04 am
ive just bought a 1994 swb pajero, and have a few problems with it, the rear parcel shelf does not reach the rear seats even though they appear to be fully back, the shelf is still an inch short of clipping on to them.also its a 2.8 automatic but only seems to have 3 gears plus the overdrive, with the overdrive on at 70 mph its revving to 2.75 is this correct, the kickdown doesnt seem to be working either any ideas anyone,?
June 9th, 2010 at 10:12 am
Mackem,
Kickdown should be easy, search for Kickdown cable adjustment on POCUK. Its a simple cable that if it is too short or too tight will effect the kickdown.
OD – When it comes in do you get a 250ish rpm drop or a 1000ish rpm drop?
3 Gears is correct.
Hope that helps
June 8th, 2010 at 10:22 pm
i have a pejero 2.8 tdi long wheelbace the otherday there was a thud that came from the back end didnt think nothing of it nowwhen driving and it getswarmed up i loose power can u help???
June 28th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
Hello Tim
I have a 1998 2.8 TDI. Just recently it has started running rough – almost as if the advance and retard is not working correctly.
Do you perhaps know what might be the cause of the problem and what the fix would be.
Regards
June 28th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
Hi Barry
Have you done any work on it lately and is it well serviced? Is it running rough all the time? Any smoke out the back and if so, what colour?
June 29th, 2010 at 7:18 am
Hello Tim
I have the vehicle regularly serviced (every 5000 km). On start-up there is some times a little white smoke and if I accelerate heavily while driving there is a small amount of black smoke. When I bring the vehicle to a stop it will (not always) idle roughly (between 800rpm and 1000rpm. As I mentioned, almost as if the advance and retard is not working correctly.
June 29th, 2010 at 5:24 pm
Hi Barry
Could be several things and I don’t want to guess and cause you more trouble. Probably best if you ask the experts here: http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=67
Hope you get it sorted.
June 29th, 2010 at 3:19 pm
I have recently aquired a 98 Evo Pajero that has been crash damaged but my main issue is where to find the fuel cutoff switch, Ive been told its perhaps in the A frame or somewhere under the bonnet or even behind the radio or under the seat but still can’t find it. Apparently it is stated under the sun visor but its in Japanese, can anyone help me locate this please
June 29th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
Hi Carlos
I haven’t a clue myself, so I asked Evo owner Tim Smith and he had two suggestions:
1. Knock sensor (centre rear of engine compartment)
shows as black wire and balck/white wire
2. There is also a G senor that serves the ABS system in the centre dash.
Hope this helps.
June 29th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
Hi all, i just bought my 1st pajero, a 1992 lwb 2.5td, loving it !! only problem is the compass isnt working.. just a blank screen, it did flash once or twice but nothing now.. ive unscrewed the covers and checked for loose wires but nothing,,, any help would be good,

ste
June 30th, 2010 at 7:02 am
Hi Ste
I believe that when the compass doesn’t even come on at all it’s due to knackered capacitors on the circuit board. Apparently these can be bought and replaced with the use of a soldering iron.
I guess buying a second hand compass is an option, though you’d need to know it was working first as this is a fairly common problem.
